Looking back from the beginning of September, we can only say that
August was an amazing month, which included gsport ... for Girls!
celebrated her first birthday in style!
It was also a special month for gsport since we signed on our first
commercial partner and are delighted that Clinique will be the sponsor
of the gsport Feature Articles. Welcome Clinique!
We see this association as a wonderful match and we look forward to
continuing to keep women informed about what it means to be a woman in
South Africa in this day and age, and the benefits of playing sport and
maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
gsport's theme this month is PASSION as we welcome Spring and get ready to give the last few months of this year our best shot.
In another significant move at gsport, swimming icon, Penny Heyns,
has come on board, and will write a monthly column for next 12 months,
for the next 12 months, with a special focus for our Olympic-bound
athletes ahead of their life-changing opportunity to represent South
Africa at Beijing 2008.

Play Sport Feature
Winter is over and its time to get active again! Since September last
year, gsport has been running a poll on our website, asking you why you
play sport. Nearly 55% of you said you played sport for the love of the
game. So, if you haven't yet found the sport of your choice, maybe its
time to give it another try. And to make it a bit easier, here's some
great information to get you started. gsport spoke to SPAR National
Women's Hockey team sports scientist, Karin Hugo, about how sports
science can assist an athlete achieve better results.
Behind the Scenes: gsport Cover Shoot
Spring is in the air, and we are delighted to announce the launch of
gsport's first cover shoot. It's something we've been contemplating for
a while now, and we're thrilled to let you know that the monthly Cover
Girl shoot will be a regular feature on gsport. This month, we chose
celebrated mountaineer, Deshun Deysel, who has embarked on the 7
Summits program, during which she aims to climb the highest mountain on
each of the seven continents. Here's a sneak behind-the-scenes peak of
the first gsport Cover shoot.
5 Mins With Springbok Captain, Nomsebenzi Tsotsobe
As Jake White's Springbok team prepare to battle for glory at the IRB
Rugby World Cup in France, the women's national team, are just hoping
for some game time ... any game time! The Springbok women haven't
played competitively since their appearance at the IRB Women's Rugby
World Cup in Canada last August. National captain, Nomsebenzi Tsotsobe,
spoke to gsport about the state of women's rugby one year after South
Africa's World Cup appearance.
5 Mins with SPAR's Wendy Kruger
Supermarket giant, SPAR, continues to reign supreme as the biggest
corporate supporter of women's sport. Last month, SPAR announced it was
renewing its sponsorship of netball for another three years in a deal
worth over R12 million. SPAR Group PR and Sponsorship Manager, Wendy
Kruger, spared a few minutes for gsport to tell us why SPAR is
passionate about supporting women's sport.
Proteas Europe Success
In November, the South African women's cricket team will head off to
Pakistan to attempt to qualify for the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup in
Australia in 2009. The squad is currently on a high after a successful
tour to Europe which included a historic win in the one-off four-day
test against Netherlands. gsport spoke to Convenor of Selectors,
Geraldine Smith, Chairperson of Cricket South Africa's Women's Cricket
Committee, Kerri Laing, and star all-rounder, Sunette Loubser, about
the progress of the women's national team over the past few months.

Ilse Langhout
Ilse Langhout is the 2007 gsport Volunteer of the Year after scooping
the honour at the inaugural gsport Awards on 1 August, 2007. In this
wonderful Personal Account story, Ilse retraces her passion for sport,
and shares with us some of her career highlights. Here's a story about
a woman who is dedicated to raising the profile of women in sport and
has achieved great results already.
Mmangwato Mabusela
Mmangwato
Mabusela is a female soccer referee from Soshanguve. She works as a
Computer Operator at the South African Post Office, and on weekends,
she lives out her passion of contributing to soccer as a referee. Her
involvement with soccer started back in 1996, but in 2001, a knee
injury curtailed her career. Mmangwato was so passionate about the game
that she decided to become a referee. Read about her hopes and dreams
for women soccer referees in SA.
Team Isigungu
Team
Isigungu could be the first women's sailing team to represent South
Africa's hopes in the Yngling class during the 2008 Beijing Olympic
Games, since qualifying for the world's most distinctive sports
tournament after an enthralling year competing in Europe's most
daunting sailing meets. Skipper Dominique Provoyeur tells gsport about
the year, and the team's Olympic aspirations.
Sharlene McGilvray
Sharlene
McGilvray is the only woman in SA who races BMX bicycles and she has
done so for the past nine years. This fun loving mother of two is 48
years old but insists she will be 18 until she dies. Meet a woman who
has an incredible passion for BMX racing and has achieved a lot in past
decade, including competing at the World BMX Champs three times. Find
out how a call to DJ Fresh on 5fm helped Sharlene receive the most
amazing support from the station's listeners.

We’re delighted to once again be featuring four outstanding South
African women in our Leading Ladies category, who serve as role models.
Our Woman of the Month is an inspirational young woman who has
personally ensured that the law will better protect women clients of
Medical Aid schemes, while our Woman in Media for September is the
vivacious SABC Sport presenter, Carol Manana.
gsport's Spring Style Star is the globally popular
Tanya van Graan, who talks to gsport about being voted the Sexiest
Woman, her true career ambitions, style and culture, and our September
gSTAR, who is also gsport's first Cover Girl, is mountaineering expert
and Laureus Sport for Good Ambassador, Deshun Deysel.
Samantha Gallièt
is best known as the woman who took her medical aid to court and won,
after they refused to pay for a special drug to help her fight breast
cancer. As a result of her experience with breast cancer, Samantha
launched PinkLink, a non profit organisation, which desires a future
where the rights of patients and those affected by breast cancer are
respected and upheld. Introducing gsport’s September Woman of the
Month, the truly incredible Samantha Gallièt!
It’s not hard to see why Carol Manana
is one of SA's most successful sports broadcasters. Her passion for
sport, her gorgeous smile, and her fabulous sense of humour has made
her a favourite with fans, and many women aspire to be like her. This
award-winning TV presenter has travelled around the world covering
international events for SABC Sport and shares some of those
experiences with us. Introducing gsport’s September Woman in Media,
Carol Manana!
She has been named FHM’s sexiest woman for 2007, but Tanya van Graan’s
real passion is acting. Her favourite actresses are Meryl Streep and
Judi Dench, and she dreams to achieve great successes of her own. Tanya
is currently working on a four-part Afrikaans drama series, her first
production in her home language. This stylish top model and actress
told gsport about her passions, plans, personal style, and her love for
golf. Introducing gsport’s September Style Star, the gorgeous Tanya van
Graan!
gsport is proud to introduce our first-ever monthly Cover Girl. At the age of 9, Deshun Deysel
dreamt of climbing Mount Everest. In 1996, at the age of 26, she became
the first black woman to set foot on Everest when she was selected for
the first South African expedition. Now, at the age of 37, she is
attempting to climb the highest mountains on each of the seven
continents. Introducing gsport’s September gSTAR; celebrated
mountaineer and a top conference speaker, Deshun Deysel!
