20090822ZaakiyahAllie1 My name is Zaakiyah Allie, I’m 15 years old and I am a Muay Thai fighter. Since the age of 6 I’ve been doing K-1 kickboxing but for the past 2 years I’ve been training Muay Thai. I recently travelled to Thailand, the home of Muay Thai, to live and train with the Thai’s.

20090822ZaakiyahAllie3It was an amazing experience that will never be forgotten. Muay Thai has impacted my life immensely; I have gained so much discipline and self-confidence in my years doing it. It has taught me respect, discipline and how to defend myself.

The things I enjoy most about Muay Thai are things like having an opportunity to meet new people all over the world. They may not always be famous fighters but just meeting people of different cultures and religions, being brought together by Muay Thai, make it very enjoyable.

It also brings families together. For example, my father, 2 cousins and younger brother, Abdul-Qayyoom Allie, also train Muay Thai. My mother is also very involved in the club. My brother is 11 years old and he is also a fighter.

As a fighter, training is extremely intense. You have to be fit and be able to take on anything. Our training involves skipping, stretching, shadow boxing, bag work, clinching, Thai pads training and sparring for the fighters.

20090822ZaakiyahAllie2It really gets you worked up! Many people will feel different about being a fighter than I do. I love Muay Thai and fighting is my passion. I absolutely love the adrenaline rush you feel whilst in the ring. The crowd chanting, the Thai fight music in the background is everything that makes being a fighter so exciting.

I have two role models in the sport of Muay Thai: my first is very close to home, she is my trainer and a huge inspiration to me, her name is Rayana Ameeroedien. She got me hooked onto Muay Thai and I am grateful that she did!

My second is a well-known Muay Thai and MMA fighter, Gina Carano from Las Vegas who trains Muay Thai at Master Toddy’s. Gina starred in the series “Fight Girls” and “Ring Girls”. I really look up to this pretty, hardcore fighter. I train at Rays Muay Thai and Fitness Centre in Lansdowne, Cape Town.

Anyone can join- and you don’t have to be a fighter to train with us. There are a handful of fighters among those that do it for fitness. To all the other girls out there, I highly recommend doing Muay Thai … No-one will ever push you around!
