Lead Feature: Gearing For Netball World Champs!
It’s a crucial few months for the SPAR National Netball team as it gears up for the Netball World Championships taking place in New Zealand in November. First up, they play Malawi here at home with the first of three test matches schedule for 21 July in Pretoria (or Pietersburg). National coach, Burta de Kock spoke to gsport about her team’s upcoming commitments, and the importance of forging ahead, with the support of committed sponsors.


Star Search: Newtown’s Chipeya Academy!
People around South Africa are doing their bit to improve the state of sport in our country. From this month onward, gsport will be finding out about different initiatives that are helping make a difference in the lives of our youth. This month, we speak to Prof Chipeya, who runs a sports school, called Chipeya Academy in Newtown, which has already unearthed some outstanding netball and soccer talent.


Women’s Cricket Forges Ahead
The South African national women’s cricket team head off the first ever back-to-back tours by our country’s women cricketers. The Proteas beat Pakistan convincingly in an ODI series here at home earlier this year, and a few of them performed admirably for the African XI in the recent Afro-Asia Challenge Twenty20 against Asia. Cricket authorities are confident that this re-energized unit will do South Africa proud in their upcoming encounters against Netherlands, England A and New Zealand.


5 Minutes with Marsha Marescia: Vying for the Olympics
The SPAR National Women’s Hockey team is busy preparing for the All Africa Games, which also doubles up as an Olympic qualifier. A win in Kenya would secure a place in the Olympics and a prized trip to Beijing. On recent performances, the team seems on track to qualify for the Olympic Games. National Captain, Marsha Marescia, spoke to gsport about how her team is shaping up ahead of their All Africa Games, which also features encounters against tough sides like Ghana and Nigeria.


Nike’s What’s Your Fight JDI Launch: Women’s Sports Stars Making Impact
Corporates are finally taking notice of our outstanding women in sport. A great example is Nike’s new Just Do It campaign, which features four South African women sporting icons, who represents what it means to strive for excellence whatever your circumstances. We salute Banyana Banyana captain, Portia Modise, Springbok women’s rugby captain, Nomsebenzi Tsotsobe, dance senation, Amy Rosslind, and swimming star, Charlene Wittstock.

Personal Account: From a Thaiboxing Champ
Rayana Ameeroedien is the first female promoter in the fighting and Thai boxing industries in South Africa. She is a professional Kickboxer and the current Bantamweight Thaiboxing Champion. In 2001, she won the South African title and from then on, she was hooked. In 2002, she started coaching and opened Ray’s Kickboxing Academy in Wynberg, Cape Town, and since then, she has trained hundreds of men and women, who enjoy the many benefits of Thaiboxing. Last year, Rayana was voted one of Cosmopolitan magazine’s 30 most Awesome Women. This is her story…


Personal Account: Chong Ming Island Cycle Tour
The South African women’s cycling team competed in the Chong Ming Island Cycle Tour last month. Robyn de Groot (Team Proline Computers) shares her experiences of the first ladies cycle tour to be held on Chong Ming Island with gsport, and says that to represent her country was a dream come true, and she felt proud to wear SA's green and gold. It’s far easier to dwell on problems, but even more satisfying to become part of the solution. That’s the message that is the life of Social Entrepreneur, and change agent, Andile Carelse. A few years ago, she revealed her painful past of being raped as a child. Her dramatic disclosure gave birth to the Open Disclosure Foundation, a haven for victims of women abuse. Andile speaks to gsport about the Foundation’s mission and her aspirations as a change agent in South Africa.


Vaylen Kirtley graced our television screens with her bubbly presentation style on SABC Sport. Now, at the age of 20, she has the kind of highlights some only dream of. Vaylen spoke to gsport about life as a sports broadcaster in South Africa, her role models, her inspirations and aspirations, and her love for sport. Her brilliant portrayal of HIV-positive Nandipa on the popular daily drama, Isidingo, has put actress Hlubi Mboya at the forefront of the fight against AIDS. This beautiful, slim, sporty young woman, who has appeared on a number of magazine covers, is full of energy, and puts it to great use as she travels Africa educating people about HIV-AIDS, using her character, Nandipa, as a great catalyst. Her ultimate dream is to win an Oscar and she is determined to follow in her style icon, Charlize Theron’s footsteps, and pursue a career in film.  Hlubi opens up to gsport about acting, HIV-AIDS, Style, and her Oscar ambitions. Tsakane Mbewe is taking the netball scene by storm with her confident play in the Premier League, most notably in the final between the Thunderbirds and the Tornados, where the national U21 and Senior Netball Striker recorded the second-best shot conversion rate. Tornados won the 2007 tournament by an agonisingly slim 37-36. Tsakane tells gsport about her life’s goals as a netball star, after seeing her idol Sindisiwe Gumede at the age of 12.
