January 2007 introduced itself with some unpleasantness for us at gsport … for Girls!, mostly due to difficulties experienced in trying to load the new edition while on the road, an experience we’d rather not repeat.

Fortunately the month turned around into a really positive one, with many new readers visiting gsport … for Girls! for the first time, and some of you contacting us with ideas and suggestions: Thank you!

Yes, 2007 is the year in which we are already furiously busy with various new and exciting developments being prepared behind the scenes, and come our first birthday in August, all of these new offerings will be in full operation.

In the mean time, we’re glad to continue offering you our regular Leading Ladies, Feature Articles and the gsport Newsroom content, all totally free of charge!

In January 2007, the first of a new year, gsport celebrated Awareness as the month’s theme. Rather than focus on one specific sport, we’ve focused on a few that grabbed our attention early this year.

Modesty, discipline, and a conservative nature personify this proud young South African athlete, who at 19 years is already firmly entrenched as our country’s No. 1-ranked female squash player. gsport spoke to Tenille Swartz about life as a premier sportswoman, and her ambitions in sport and career. The South African netball team is finding its feet under new coach Burta de Kock. gsport spoke to coach de Kock about star performer Yvonne Phiri's tragic death, the loss to the team of a number of key performers, and the team's preparations and plans for 2007. Read on .../

 

Shandre Fritz was named captain of the South African national women’s cricket team in November of 2006, but a freak swimming accident shortly after has put her on the sidelines. gsport caught up with Shandre at Newlands in Cape Town, where she was an Adjudicator in the Man-of-the-Match award during the Proteas’ third test against India.
