Legendary South African mountaineer and Laureus Friend and Ambassador, Deshun Deysel, pictured on one of her many exciting climbs.
Deysel is currently involved with the "Seven Summits" project - a bid to climb the highest peak on each of the seven continents, and reached the summit of Mt Elbrus in Russia during August, as part of this exciting initiative. She is best known to the South African public as the first black woman in the world to set foot on the slopes of Mt. Everest. The Laureus Sport for Good Foundation Trust South Africa funds and promotes sport as a powerful tool for progressive social change with the support of Discovery and Daimler Chrysler. The Helderberg Partnership Project is an initiative aimed at increasing awareness about child sexual abuse and related social issues in the Helderberg basin, and also offers weekly coaching sessions in athletics, cross-country, road running and race walking. The Future Champs Programme, based in Khayelitsha, identifies its main focus areas as the prevention of substance abuse and the improvement of general literacy among youth. Participants are also encouraged to participate in netball and rugby. Trustee, Iain Banner as well as Laureus Friends and Ambassadors' Cynthia Tshaka, Natalie du Toit and Bronwyn Bock-Jonathan will join in on the activities of the day.
