Knowing others is wisdom, knowing yourself is enlightenment.
Tao Tzu

The great masters teach that we are only able to experience awareness when we are in the present moment.  We become aware of the world around us through our five senses.  The moment we move out of the present, and let our thoughts wonder to the past, or to the future, we no longer experience sensory awareness.  We can only imagine or think about a projected situation or scenario – we cannot hear, smell, see, taste or touch it, no matter how active our imaginations.  Entering completely into the present moment is the point of power that enables us to become aware.

Awareness is the first step in the creation process.  As you grow in self-awareness, you will better understand why you feel what you feel and why you behave as you behave.  You cannot create the life you want without that understanding.

It is very comforting to know that there are doorways through which we can move, behind which burns brightly the light of awareness:

  • Your wounds are a doorway.  Untying the bandages which bind you into your discomfort will often reveal scars that have formed over your hidden pain, grief, rage or longing.  Your physical body will often reflect your hidden pain.  Where do you hurt?  What lies beneath your hurt?  Habitually holding in, or distorting your anger, grief, fear and rage will eventually cause physical symptoms.  Interpreting your symptoms with the support of a trusted healthcare practitioner is a doorway.

  • Your belief system is the foundation from which all your thoughts, feelings and action stem.  Uncovering and challenging the beliefs you have acquired from your parents, your peers and your culture (especially your culture!) is a door.  You may need to release yourself from some of the fears you may have bought into such as “I am not thin, clever, attractive, strong or good enough” or “Men don’t cry, show weakness, wear pink, act gently …….” or even the famous one “Money is the root of all evil”.  Put quiet time aside to analyze your current belief systems and keep on questioning whether they serve your highest interests or not.  Remember that where there is fear, there is stagnation.  As you develop self-awareness you will respond to your life situations very differently.

  • Your yearning for a deeper, fuller, more meaningful life is a door.  What makes you ache with longing?  If the way the moonlight dances on the silver surface of the water stirs your soul then this is a door.  What is it deep inside you that you truly desire – to be more free, more secure, more loved, more able, more creative?  Inspire yourself with the beauty that surrounds you, stay present, and you will be surprised how much you learn about yourself!

As you enter into this bright New Year, may you be blessed with many moments of quiet wonder and presence.  May all the doors you choose to walk through lead you to Yourself.
