Noni Gasa stole our hearts when she was unveiled as the Face of SA Fashion Week in 2005.

Since then, she has received numerous style accolades, including winning the Sunday Times/Elle Magazine TV style award, and has achieved further success in her own style show.

Noni hates being called a fashion icon, but we can’t get enough of her style, individuality and dynamic personality to boot.

Introducing our Style Star for September, fashion icon, and all-round amazing woman: Noni Gasa.

In gsport’s Spring edition, we ask Noni about her style, her new clothing line, and her favourite sport.

You were pretty busy in 2005, what’s 2006 been like?

Better controlled, but just as busy. I'm not complaining, y'know.

I'd much rather be busy than without work. I'm fortunate enough to dictate what I wanna do from day-to-day.

The joys of self-employment are that each day is never the same. I think I'd lose my mind if I had to go back to the office full time.

What projects are you working on?

A new tv show for next year, promoting my new "Noni" clothing line, freelance writing for various magazines, and fundraising for Ikageng Itireleng AIDS Hospice in Soweto.

Tell us more about the “Noni” clothing line

The "Noni" range is just perfect for summer. As you know, the look for this season is nautical, so navy-inspired clothing is back with a bang!

My range, therefore, experiments with lots of stripes, reds, blues, polka dots, and reds. It is easy-to-wear, casual, everyday fashion. Practical and affordable.

How would you define your style?
Toned down; an interesting combination of 'safe' colours with playful designs; classic, ageless styles; no compromise on comfort; vintage; clever use of accessories; sometimes tomboyish, sometimes lady-like.

Where do you shop for clothes?

Anywhere and everywhere! I have my own clothing range at Legit stores countrywide now, so I generally live in outfits from the "Noni" range.

But I enjoy shopping at exclusive (and secluded) boutiques, even 2nd hand shops - that way I'm guaranteed of not wearing 'public uniform'.

But I must say that some of my favourite pieces have been bought from big department stores. The styles are easy, and the price tags are even better!

What’s the strangest outfit you’ve ever worn?

Hmm...most probably my "Billy Bob" suit that I wore to a fancy dress party last month. Let's just say my huge afro, shiny jacket, and rotten false teeth were, uh, charming.

Favourite item of clothing?
Tough one. I can't decided between my bootleg "Noni" jeans, or my multi-coloured Lacoste golf t-shirts.

Who are your favourite South African designers?
T
hula Sindi, Stoned Cherrie, Gavin Rajah, African Mosaique, JJ Schoeman, and David Tlale.

Who is your style icon?

Don't really have one. I guess I admire a lot of people's styles - but I don't necessarily adapt them to suit me.

But I especially like the way Tamara Dey, Nkhensani Nkosi, Pulane Kingston, Karin Orzol (Elle), Jessica Alba, and my mother choose their clothes.

What are your music tastes?
Eclectic. My CD player is currently loaded with Corinne Bailey Rae, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Jill Scott, Dr Dre, Chris Brown, Koldproduk, Notorious BIG, Kelis, and Pharrell Williams.

Favourite food

To snack - biltong, plain yoghurt, Purity baby food, Cheesecurls, Magnum almond ice-cream.

To pig out - peri-peri calamari, prawn curry, barbecue pork ribs, and salmon bagels.

I'm getting the munchies just thinking about it!

Star Sign

Leo

Favourite actors

Sean Penn, Dame Judi Dench, Nicole Kidman, Edward Norton, Cate Blanchett, Robert de Niro.

Favourite Colour

Black, black, and more black!

Favourite sport

To play - hockey, swimming.

To watch - Formula 1 racing, athletics, Brazilian football.

Favourite sports star

Any one of those HOT - oops...I mean TALENTED - Brazilian soccer players. Whatever their names are...
