Nicole Fox is one of South Africa’s most popular and stylish radio DJ’s, and it’s not hard to see why.

A music fanatic who is hot, smart, sassy, and sporty… Well, if perving at hot footballers counts!

Nicole has been on a host of “Hot 100” lists, nominated as “Best Radio Personality” three years in a row at the People Magazine Crystal Awards, and in a first for South Africa, she broadcast her 5FM show live from the MTV Europe Music Awards in Lisbon last November.

Last year, Nicole won the “Star In U” Kids Choice Award for “Favourite Female DJ”, and also won “Most Innovative Style” and the overall “Most Stylish” award at the SA Style Awards.

Her vivacious personality and individual style have seen her crack an invite as a guest presenter on Top Billing, interviewing megastars including Will Smith and Sigourney Weaver.

Just recently, Nicole was chosen as the host of the Revlon Supermodel 2006 show.

Apart from her Monday-Friday 7-10pm nighttime show on 5FM, she also now presents the Pepsi World Chart Show on the national youth station every Saturday from 10am.

Despite her hectic schedule, this jet-setting sista took time out to tell gsport about her love for radio, her fashion sense, her growing TV career, and her passion for sport.

By the sounds of it, you’re having an awesome year. How are you enjoying 2006?

I’ve been loving my year! 2006 has been about having fresh ideas and working on them, which has brought about new and exciting ventures.

I’ve been blessed with the most phenomenal work this year, and I’ve had fun doing everything, which is always important.

It’s been good for me to expand and make changes, so as to keep moving forward passionately.

Your show on 5fm is a real hit. What do you enjoy most about being on radio?

I love the medium of radio. It’s fun, live, immediate and totally spontaneous at times.

You never really know what’s going to happen when, for instance, you’ve got someone calling in, and that keeps me on my toes.

I also love the fact that we can talk to each other without seeing one another, and by that I mean that it’s got nothing to do with how one looks, but more about actually relating to people.

It’s a great medium, absolutely!

Who was the inspiration behind the immensely popular Fox Football 101?

5fm had a commercial sponsor on board for the World Cup.

As part of this arrangement, we all had to announce the kick off, half time, second half and final whistle, and real-time scores along with updates as every goal was scored.

I realized that there would be 27 World Cup football games taking place during my show alone!

Now, I knew nothing about football besides the fact that the teams ran from one side to the other trying to score a goal.

So I realized that if I didn’t want to sound like a complete idiot, I had to learn fast.

That’s when I came up with Fox Football 101 which was basically me saying, “I have no idea what’s going on so please teach me!”

It worked! At the end of it, I ran the Fox Football 101 “Exam” on air and won 5-nil! Ha ha!

It was fantastic for me too; I learnt so much about the game and the players, that I got really caught up in the excitement of it all.

gsport’s theme for October is SUPPORT. Who have supported you in your career?

I wouldn’t have been anywhere without the support I’ve had. My parents have always been unbelievable.

They’ve always encouraged me to succeed; they’ve been a shoulder to cry on, my advisors and also my biggest fans.

My friends have been just as phenomenal, always there for me through thick and thin.

Sometimes there are large chunks of time that go by where I’m too busy with work and unable to see as much of my friends and family as I’d like, and they’ve never applied pressure on me for that, always understanding and ready for the next party.

I’ve also surrounded myself with an amazing team of mentors and supporters such as my manager, agents and publicist, who have become invaluable to me.

My fans have also been an amazing support to me throughout my career.

Without their encouraging emails and kind words, there would have definitely been days when I could easily have thrown in the towel!

What was it like hosting Revlon Supermodel?

Revlon Supermodel was fantastic! What a great show to be involved in; to enable us to make one girl’s wildest dreams come true by getting her started on the career of a lifetime.

I think all the finalists gained a lot from the competition, and I love seeing women learn, grow and empower themselves, I find that really rewarding.

What is your favourite sport?

I love watching cricket and now football! I also love all forms of dancing.

Personally, I really enjoy my weight- and cardio training, bikram yoga, and have also recently started Tae-Kwon Do, which has been quite liberating in terms of trying something new and really enjoying it!

Who is your favourite sports star?

There’s no question about that; it has to be football player Fabio Cannavaro. Ha ha!

How would you define your style?

I’d say my style is chic and classic, but always with something eccentric or interesting thrown into the mix.

I like looking a little different to the crowd.

Where do you shop for clothes?

I shop predominantly around Joburg and Cape Town for clothes. For functions, I sometimes have dresses made for me, which is always really special.

I’m also lucky in that I get to travel a lot, so whenever I go abroad, I shop up a storm.

I particularly love New York for its amazing selection of clothes, trainers and jeans.

What’s the strangest outfit you’ve ever worn?

Because I like to throw together outfits and pieces rather spontaneously, I have had a couple of looks that at the time I thought were killer, but looking back at photos now, I sometimes wonder what I was thinking.

But if you don’t try, you’ll never know. Ha ha!

What is your favourite item of clothing?

My shoes! I am such a sucker when it comes to shoes; I just love them.

I have a fabulous pair I bought in the Caribbean which is all bling, they’re beautiful!

Who are your favourite South African designers?

There are so many South African designers doing wonderful work, so it’s tough to single them out, but I’d have to say Marion & Lindie, Boudoir Frocks, Gideon, Kluk, Jenni Button and Julian are some of my favourites.

Who is your style icon?

Madonna! She’s managed to pull off so many style reinventions in her career and I find her fearlessness in change absolutely inspiring.

What are your music tastes?

I’m a serious top 40 girl! I love my pop music and so I’m a fan of artists representing just about every genre.

Being on radio, it’s also part of my job to be educated about a wide range of music, but because it’s my one big passion in life, I love listening to anything and everything.

This year, I was chosen as a judge in the MTV Europe Music Awards, and I’m happy to say that I was mostly spot on with my nominations, which means I’m on top of that top 40 pop thing!

What is your favourite food?

Seafood, sushi, pasta and a good old South African braai!

Star Sign?

Aquarius

Favourite actors?

Tom Cruise, John Travolta, Scarlett Johansson, Juliette Lewis and Meryl Streep.

Favourite colour?

Silver, gold and anything that sparkles

Advice for aspiring radio DJ’s?

On a practical level, get into some kind of radio, for experience.

Campus and in-store radio is a really good place to start.

But at the end of the day, I encourage you to go out there and do it! You can achieve anything you set your mind to, as long as you believe in yourself.

Seize every opportunity you can and work hard.

I’ve always found inspiration in this quote, “Begin somewhere. You cannot build a reputation on what you intend to do.”

Still to achieve?

Everything!
